There are a number of different wagers you can choose when wagering. All of these variations stem from one core premise: Bettors receive payouts based on the first, second, third and fourth place finishers. In racing terms, the first three finishers are termed Win, Place and Show. Generally, online bets are offered in two types in any sports betting pursuit. Bettors can choose between money line or a straight-up bet and point spread wager. Straight-up wagers are normally utilized in sports like baseball and soccer where the point system is a bit off for point spread wagering. Straight-up bets are also used in individual match sports like boxing. Meanwhile, point spread wagers are common among football and basketball sports. In a point spread wager, a bettor can only collect his winnings when the team he bet on won the score more than that of the winning margin specified during the actual betting. The same goes for the person who bets on the losing team, requiring that his team loses lesser points than agreed upon.

Apart from the two general types of bets, there are also other betting actions bettors can take part in. There are the proposition bets which are bets made on distinct sports outcome. An example of a proposition bet would be wagering whether Tracy McGrady would be making more three-point shots than say, Kobe Bryant. Another betting alternative is the parlay. In a parlay, a bettor engages in several bets where the total payout would be considerably larger. For example, one bettor could engage in four separate bets on a parlay of four teams where he is betting for all the wagers to win. If one of his four wagers was a flop, he loses that parlay; if all the bets win, he collects all the winnings which would be equivalent to a princely amount. Future bets, on the other hand, are bets made on predictions of a player or a team's future achievements. An example of a future wage is when a bettor wagers that Charlotte Bobcats would win the next NBA season. The bettor then wagers on a 50-1 odds of Bobcats winning the NBA finals. If he wins, he will collect the total amount of his wager fiftyfold.

Contrary to popular belief, winning bets is not dependent on luck alone. Although sports betting sounds as straightforward as betting on what team would win the tonight's match on NFL or NBA, the activity itself is a set of slightly complicated mathematical process. Sports betting, like any gambling activity, depends hugely on odds. This means that a bettor has to consider many things other than mere luck. Knowledge in probability and statistics may come in handy, but more than anything else, a full understanding of the basics of sports betting is something that every bettor must equip himself with. A thorough knowledge of the mechanics of sports betting is not the only element necessary to become a proficient and adept sports bettor. More than prowess in formulaic computation of odds and possibilities, a sports bettor must be absolutely familiar with the sports he is betting on. It's utterly pointless to wager on something that a person does not even understand. In sports betting lingo, sports betting whiz are called "wise guys". These are the type of bettors completely informed about the wagers they are placing and the action they are involved in. Wise guys in sports betting make sure that the wagers they make are set on winners. The opposite of wise guys are squares. Squares are mostly novices to sports betting and possess only very little knack on placing bets, especially winning ones. Most veteran sports bettors start out as squares but soon move on to wise-guy levels with constant practice and willingness to expand their knowledge on sports betting.
As good as sports betting sounds, there are several glitches in the system. Like all popular celebrities, online sports betting is not exempt from issues. There are many takes where the issue of online sports betting is concerned. Those who favor gambling say that online sports betting is merely a pastime for sports enthusiasts to boost the interests towards sporting events. They say that sports betting amplify the excitement, thrill, and anticipation associated with the game. Online gambling advocates also add that sports betting benefits athletes, leagues, and teams because it goads a bigger audiences on televised events and higher live spectators turnout. But people opposed to online gambling have a more solid reason, saying that sports betting threatens to tarnish the credibility and integrity of sports and athletes. This is because sports betting have a rather ugly record of fixed matches that ruined the entire objective of sports and competition. Other than these game fixing hullabaloo, account and Internet identity theft are also among the biggest issues against online sports betting. But these problems and issues are easily avoided if players would only exercise vigilance in picking the sites to wager on. There are several factors to consider in choosing a sports book site. Other than excellent odds and extensive betting options, players should also consider the sites' credibility. A credible site usually features the following: good customer support systems, a license, and good banking options. Finding a reliable and secure sports betting site over the Internet is not difficult because there are at least a hundred of them on the web. Ask around in online gambling forum sites about what sports betting site they can recommend. At the same time, read online reviews about different sports betting sites to find which one stands out from the rest.
